Risk Manager (CPCU, CRIS) Position Overview
The Risk Manager (CPCU, CRIS) plays a crucial role in overseeing and managing all aspects of risk within a specialty contracting organization. This full-time position serves as a strategic business partner to executive leadership, ensuring that risks associated with ongoing operations are identified, assessed, and effectively mitigated. As a highly visible member of the internal team, the Risk Manager (CPCU, CRIS) acts as a liaison between executive leadership, operational management, and third-party consultants—including legal counsel, third party administrators, and insurance and surety brokers. This ensures comprehensive risk oversight and efficient collaboration among stakeholders.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise the Risk Management Department and provide leadership for all risk-related initiatives.
- Oversee commercial insurance and surety programs, managing relationships with brokers, claimants, third party administrators, insurance companies, legal counsel, sureties, auditors, and advisors.
- Lead the insurance placement process for all property and casualty coverage, including risk identification, exposure analysis, underwriting submissions, policy review, and negotiation with brokers and carriers to secure favorable proposals.
- Administer and oversee Workers Compensation Policies and claims in monopolistic states, ensuring compliance and effective claim management.
- Act as the primary contact for surety brokers, oversee monthly bond reporting, and coordinate the annual surety and broker meeting.
- Manage the claims process from initial notification through investigation and dispute resolution, including litigation and settlement strategy in collaboration with outside counsel, adjusters, and General Counsel.
- Work closely with the Safety Department on incident investigations, injury management, and transitional duty assignments.
- Collaborate with the Finance and Accounting Department to establish and monitor insurance claim reserves and appropriately allocate insurance costs across operating entities.
- Provide training and consultation on insurance coverage, claims management, risk identification, and mitigation strategies to executive and operational leadership, branch managers, and account managers.
- Travel occasionally within the United States to meet with executive management, visit branch offices, attend mediations, arbitrations, civil hearings, and conduct required training sessions.
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to handle both strategic planning and tactical execution within risk management functions.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills to effectively guide risk management initiatives.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interact with various levels of the organization and external partners.
- Proficiency with ERP systems or similar business information platforms and comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Five to ten years of experience in risk management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designations such as CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), CRIS (Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist), or similar are preferred.
- Experience in the construction industry is highly desirable.
- Prior experience with captive insurance companies is a plus.
