We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Project Engineer – Commercial Construction (PE) to join a reputable commercial general contracting firm in San Diego, CA. This full-time role is vital for ensuring the successful planning, execution, and completion of engineering and construction projects. As a Project Engineer – Commercial Construction (PE), you will play a pivotal role in organizing project resources, coordinating with cross-functional teams, and maintaining project schedules and budgets while upholding industry standards and regulatory compliance. Key Responsibilities
- Direct and coordinate the planning, organization, and integration of all elements of assigned engineering projects to ensure timely and successful completion.
- Formulate engineering programs and organize project staff based on project requirements.
- Assign project personnel to various phases, including technical studies, product design, specification preparation, and product testing, according to staff expertise.
- Review product designs for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, customer contracts, and project specifications.
- Coordinate technical developments, manage scheduling, and resolve engineering design and testing issues as they arise during the project lifecycle.
- Direct integration of technical activities and products to ensure streamlined project progress.
- Evaluate and approve design changes, specifications, and drawing releases, maintaining strict quality and compliance standards.
- Monitor and control project expenditures within established budget limitations.
- Prepare interim and final project reports to document progress and outcomes.
- Assist the Superintendent in analyzing and resolving field construction issues, ensuring projects adhere to safety and quality standards.
- Solicit and qualify subcontractor proposals to ensure adherence to contract requirements.
- Prepare, review, and distribute Requests for Information (RFIs) and maintain accurate logs.
- Evaluate submittals and shop drawings for compliance with contract documents and specifications.
- Collaborate with the Superintendent and Project Manager to develop and maintain project schedules.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of contract documents, specifications, and project requirements.
- Support the Project Manager with budget management and processing change orders as needed.
- Manage project closeout, ensuring all warranties and final acceptance requirements are met.
- Foster positive and professional relationships with project owners, architects, engineers, and contractors.
- Develop project objectives by reviewing proposals and plans in consultation with management.
- Identify project phases and elements, assign personnel accordingly, and review contractor bids.
- Establish project specifications by studying product design, customer needs, and performance standards.
- Confirm product performance through design and testing procedures.
- Establish and maintain project schedules by analyzing plans and sequencing project elements.
- Monitor project progress, coordinate activities, and resolve any issues to keep the project on track.
- Review and recommend actions for design, specification, and schedule changes to control the project plan.
- Approve expenditures and administer contractor contracts to control project costs.
- Prepare status reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing data and trends.
- Ensure a safe, clean working environment by enforcing relevant procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Maintain project databases, including writing programs, entering, and backing up data as required.
- Uphold the company’s reputation by complying with all federal and state regulations.
- Contribute to team efforts by accomplishing related tasks as needed.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or a closely related field is required.
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in tools such as Procore and Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Project.
- Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) or Revit, and LEED accreditation is advantageous.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive, team-oriented attitude.
- 3-4 years of experience in a similar Project Engineer – Commercial Construction (PE) role is required.
- 2-4 years of direct construction experience is necessary.
