The Project Commissioning Engineer (also known as Commissioning Engineer or Project Engineer) plays a vital role in the successful start-up, commissioning, and operational acceptance of renewable natural gas (RNG) plants. This position requires a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership, and project management abilities, making it pivotal to the execution and completion of complex projects in the energy and industrial sectors. The Project Commissioning Engineer collaborates closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure that all systems and equipment are installed, tested, and commissioned to meet rigorous operational standards and client expectations.
As a Project Commissioning Engineer, you will oversee the end-to-end commissioning process, from Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) through to full plant operation. This includes managing the coordination of multidisciplinary teams, ensuring compliance with industry best practices, and providing direct support for both individual skid and Balance of Plant (BOP) controls. You will be responsible for delivering projects on time and within budget while upholding safety, quality, and regulatory requirements throughout the process.
In this role, you will utilize your extensive experience with RNG plants, gas compression, and separation systems. Your problem-solving skills and ability to think on your feet will be critical when issues arise during commissioning, requiring real-time decision-making and effective resolution strategies. Project Commissioning Engineer - Summary- Lead the commissioning and start-up process for RNG plants from SAT through full operational acceptance.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, technicians, contractors, and vendors.
- Provide technical leadership and coaching to team members throughout the commissioning phase.
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with all safety and quality standards.
- Serve as the primary technical expert for skid and Balance of Plant controls support.
- Manage the complete commissioning lifecycle for RNG plants, including planning, execution, and post-commissioning support.
- Lead cross-functional teams to achieve start-up and operational requirements efficiently.
- Interact with customers, internal teams, and external partners to align project objectives and resolve technical challenges.
- Conduct troubleshooting and real-time problem-solving during field operations.
- Oversee equipment testing, system validation, and documentation for regulatory compliance.
- Support equipment design, manufacturing, and startup processes.
- Maintain clear and effective communication with all project stakeholders.
- Travel to project sites as required for hands-on commissioning and support (up to 50%+).

- Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent experience required.
- 7-10 years of experience with RNG plants, landfill or biogas systems, gas compression, or separation equipment in related industries.
- Demonstrated expertise in equipment design, manufacturing, testing, and start-up for RNG operations.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills in field environments.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and team collaboration skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; CAD and project management certifications (such as PMP) are a plus.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and meet critical deadlines.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively as needed for project requirements.
- Experienced engineer with a strong background in commissioning, project management, and renewable energy technologies.
