Project Accountant Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Project Accountant to join a leading commercial construction general contractor/developer. This full-time position, based in San Diego, CA, offers an opportunity to support the financial operations of various high-profile construction projects. As a Project Accountant, you will play a vital role in managing subcontract payables and ensuring all payments and accounting tasks are handled in accordance with company and contractual requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Review subcontractor applications, lien releases, and affidavits of suppliers to ensure accuracy and compliance with billing requirements.
- Communicate with subcontractors regarding any missing or non-compliant billing requirements, and facilitate timely resolution.
- Maintain consistent communication with project managers and subcontractors throughout the entire payment process, ensuring transparency and completion of all steps.
- Process subcontract payments with strict attention to meeting all billing prerequisites and documentation standards.
- Organize and maintain electronic filing systems for all subcontract documents, ensuring easy retrieval and security of sensitive information.
- Verify prevailing wage requirements for subcontractors when applicable, supporting compliance with legal and contractual obligations.
- Review and verify the accuracy of subcontract agreements and change orders, inputting updates into the accounting system as needed.
- Process job cost transfers related to materials, equipment, and other project-related expenses, helping to maintain accurate cost tracking.
- Compile invoices and supporting documentation for monthly owner substantiation, ensuring thorough and transparent financial reporting.
- Perform general accounting and administrative duties as assigned, supporting the overall operations of the accounting department.
- Collaborate with other team members, including project analysts and project teams, to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work effectively within a shared inbox system to manage workflow and communications.
- Minimum of one year of accounting administrative experience, preferably in a construction environment.
- At least one year of experience with accounts payable in the construction sector, demonstrating a solid understanding of industry practices.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks, with at least one year of hands-on experience managing accounts and transactions using this software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling effective collaboration and clear documentation.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative, prioritize tasks, and drive projects to completion with minimal supervision.
- Exceptional attention to detail, along with strong time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Dedication to excellent customer service, supporting both internal teams and external partners.
