Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT, RST) - SummaryThe Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT, RST) plays a key role in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. This professional is responsible for performing a range of polysomnographic and related diagnostic tests, tailoring support for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. The technologist ensures accurate data collection, equipment functionality, and patient safety throughout the sleep study process. The position requires flexibility to work night shifts, rotating shifts, and weekends as necessary to meet the needs of a 24-hour accredited sleep disorders center.
Duties & Responsibilities- Conduct and score all types of sleep studies, including overnight polysomnography (with multiple montages), MSLT, MWT, CPAP, Bi-level, ASV, iVAPS/AVAPs titration, pH monitoring, portable sleep studies, and actigraphy sleep studies.
- Set up, calibrate, and maintain sleep acquisition equipment; troubleshoot and resolve technical issues to ensure high-quality data collection.
- Apply electrodes and sensors according to established protocols and perform physiologic calibrations for optimal signal quality.
- Perform positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fittings and adjust device settings for a range of sleep-related breathing disorder treatments, including APAP, CPAP, BiPAP, and adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV).
- Monitor and assess patient usage and adherence to sleep therapy devices; provide counseling and make adjustments to enhance treatment outcomes and comfort.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and transcribe data for physician interpretation, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
- Maintain ongoing compliance with American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) accreditation standards, including completion of monthly Inter-Scorer Reliability scoring and annual continuing education credits (CECs).
- Deliver age-specific care, assessment, and education for patients ranging from infants (six months and above) to geriatric populations.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and clinical team members to facilitate quality care and foster a supportive environment.
- Address environmental, equipment, and engineering issues that may affect patient care delivery, taking appropriate action as needed.

- Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), or Registered/Certified Respiratory Therapist-Sleep Disorders Specialist (RRT-SDS/CRT-SDS) credentials, or ability to obtain registration within two years of hire.
- If not registered at the time of hire, must be enrolled in or have completed A-STEP Online Self Study Modules, or have completed training in a CAAHEP/CoARC-accredited polysomnography program within two years of enrollment.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Minimum of one year of recent experience conducting sleep studies in a patient care setting, with at least one year of experience scoring sleep studies within the last three years.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Physical capability to lift and move equipment and patients, read equipment displays and patient records, and maintain stamina during long monitoring sessions.
- Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of sleep medicine and diagnostic testing procedures.
- Possesses strong technical troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
- Exhibits effective communication, interpersonal, and patient education abilities.
- Adapts to variable shift schedules and remains focused during extended monitoring sessions.
