The Pediatric Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) plays a vital role in delivering specialized mental health care to children and adolescents. This position functions as a trusted consultant, collaborating closely with primary care providers (PCPs) to conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and develop evidence-based treatment plans. The Pediatric Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) offers brief consultations and supports the continuity of care by returning patients to their PCPs post-assessment, while also ensuring all clinical practices comply with organizational protocols and policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations of pediatric patients referred by PCPs, ensuring a detailed assessment of mental health status, psychosocial factors, and medical history.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans for children and adolescents with psychiatric needs, in alignment with the latest clinical guidelines and best practices.
- Prescribe appropriate psychotropic medications, monitor patient response, and adjust treatment as clinically indicated, always adhering to safety and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including primary care providers, to support integrated care and optimize patient outcomes.
- Provide timely follow-up appointments and consultations, meeting expected productivity and quality benchmarks.
- Document all clinical interactions and treatment plans accurately in electronic medical records, utilizing information systems and point-of-care technology.
- Support and uphold the mission, vision, and values of the organization, ensuring all actions are consistent with compliance protocols and internal policies.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an accredited nursing program.
- ANCC board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) or Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Current and valid state APRN license with independent prescriptive authority.
- Possession of a valid DEA certificate and any required state-level substance control registrations.
- Minimum of two years’ full-time experience as a psychiatric nurse practitioner specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and computer-based data management systems.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective collaboration and patient education.
- Knowledge of disease prevention principles is considered an asset.
