The Medical Billing Specialist plays a vital role in the healthcare revenue cycle by ensuring the accurate and timely resolution of accounts receivable (A/R) for hospital and physician billing. As a key member of the accounts receivable follow-up team, the Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for addressing denied, underpaid, and unresolved insurance claims, working diligently to recover revenue for healthcare providers. This position involves a high degree of problem-solving, attention to detail, and collaboration with payers, colleagues, and clients to resolve complex billing issues.
Medical Billing Specialists leverage their expertise in healthcare billing systems and coding to research and resolve outstanding accounts. The role demands proficiency with revenue cycle management software, as well as a strong understanding of industry-standard forms, coding, and payer-specific reimbursement guidelines. Medical Billing Specialist - Summary- Responsible for back-end accounts receivable follow-up, resolution of aged accounts, and working denials for hospital and physician billing.
- Assists healthcare providers and hospital entities with remediation of third-party A/R and revenue cycle outsource capabilities.
- Resolves assigned accounts by following up with commercial and government payers and collecting outstanding insurance claim balances.
- Requires in-depth research, problem-solving, and adherence to productivity and quality standards.
- Perform second-tier account follow-up in accordance with organizational, client, and regulatory guidelines for outstanding insurance receivables.
- Address high-dollar accounts receivable and investigate items requiring further assistance or escalation.
- Apply healthcare revenue cycle expertise to ensure achievement of quality control standards.
- Professionally communicate with colleagues, payers, and clients regarding account status and resolution.
- Ensure accurate and complete follow-up by understanding carrier-specific reimbursement, including eligibility discrepancies and claim form reviews.
- Identify and communicate trends, payer behavior, and workflow inconsistencies to team leadership.
- Research and document correspondence related to assigned accounts.
- Assess accounts for balance accuracy, confirm payer billed, coding accuracy, denials, and outstanding insurance requests.
- Provide proper documentation, submit corrections, or escalate payer errors for re-processing.
- Identify billing or coding issues and initiate re-bills, secondary billing, or corrected bills as necessary.
- Contact third-party payers and government agencies to resolve outstanding account balances.
- Maintain departmental productivity and quality standards.
- Demonstrate general PC aptitude, keyboarding ability (minimum 40 wpm), and proficiency with Microsoft Suite and internet browsers.

- Minimum of 1-2 years of healthcare provider revenue cycle experience.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Hands-on experience with Epic, Cerner, Invision, Soarian, McKesson, Allscripts, Meditech, and other industry-standard revenue cycle management systems.
- Knowledge of UB-04 and/or HCFA 1500 billing and account follow-up, CPT and ICD-10 coding, and terminology for hospital and/or ambulatory/physician billing.
- Ability to multitask across several applications and systems simultaneously.
- Typing speed of at least 40 wpm.
- Physical ability to sit for long periods and occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
- Proactive problem-solver with a solid understanding of the healthcare revenue cycle.
- Demonstrates strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Detail-oriented, able to manage priorities, and committed to maintaining productivity and quality.
- Proficient with industry-standard billing systems and Microsoft Suite.
