Medical Biller Job Summary
The Medical Biller plays a critical role within the billing department by handling the complete cycle of patient billing processes, including third-party payer filings, insurance verification, coding, and reconciliation of invoices for patient-related ancillary services. Reporting directly to the Billing Manager and Office Manager, the Medical Biller ensures the accuracy and completeness of billing records while adhering to current healthcare billing standards. This full-time position is integral to maintaining the financial health of the organization and supporting the delivery of quality healthcare services.
Responsibilities
- Review superbills or electronic equivalents for accuracy and completeness, ensuring proper coding and charging for all patient services.
- Enter patient fees and billing codes into the practice management system, maintaining accurate and up-to-date records.
- Run and verify Daily Close/End of Day reports to ensure all transactions are properly recorded and reconciled.
- Receive, process, and post hospital charges, maintaining comprehensive billing files for each patient.
- Process patient statements and manage third-party billings, ensuring timely and accurate submission to insurance providers.
- Assist with the investigation, processing, and resubmission of denied or returned third-party explanation of benefit statements.
- Determine and process patient fee adjustments in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Back up the Dental Billing Specialist as needed to ensure continuity of billing services.
- Respond promptly and professionally to patient account inquiries, providing clear and accurate information.
- Monitor patient account receivables, identifying and referring delinquent accounts to the Patient Account Specialist for follow-up.
- Review and reconcile invoices for ancillary services such as laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy to ensure billing accuracy.
- Stay current with healthcare billing practices and participate in ongoing quality improvement activities.
- Assist administrative staff by processing incoming and outgoing mail and operating specialized office equipment.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures and perform other duties as assigned by the Billing Supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certification through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or an equivalent credential is preferred.
- Minimum of two years of experience in billing and collections is required; experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
- Competency in working with culturally diverse populations is valued.
- Experience in finance may substitute for direct billing and collections experience.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of general accounting principles and medical billing practices.
- Familiarity with CPT and ICD-10 codes and the use of automated information management system software.
- Technically proficient computer and office equipment skills, including the use of copiers, fax machines, and printers.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with staff and patients.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and meet established deadlines.
- Analytical mindset with keen attention to detail and effective problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to function effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Occasional moderate lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 20 pounds.
- Clear diction and acute hearing required for effective communication.
- Work is performed in a general medical office or clinic setting with clean and safe working conditions.
