Medical Assistant (MA) Position Overview
The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in supporting healthcare providers with both patient care and essential administrative and clinical tasks. This full-time position at Dawson Med UC & PC is designed for individuals dedicated to ensuring efficient medical office operations and seamless patient experiences. Reporting directly to the Clinical Lead, the Medical Assistant is instrumental in maintaining a smooth workflow within the clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain an orderly and efficient patient flow by ensuring patients are checked in, screened, and attended to promptly within the medical office environment.
- Assist staff in performing initial triage for patients, whether they contact the office via telephone regarding an urgent medical situation or arrive for scheduled or unscheduled appointments.
- Accurately execute and document vital signs for patients of all ages, as well as perform EKGs, spirometry tests, and CLIA-waived diagnostic tests such as urinalysis and urine pregnancy tests, as instructed by the healthcare provider.
- Support healthcare providers during specialized medical procedures and examinations, including but not limited to pap smears and annual physical exams.
- Set up, operate, disinfect, and maintain specialized clinical equipment for diagnostic tests such as audiometry and vision examinations, ensuring compliance with safety and sterilization protocols.
- Order medication refills under provider supervision and in accordance with organizational policies, while preparing laboratory and procedure orders as directed by the provider and standing orders, ensuring alignment with the patient's health plan.
- Maintain a clean, sterile, and well-supplied exam room environment, including proper disinfection after each patient visit and isolating patients with infectious conditions as required.
- Facilitate timely and effective communication between providers and patients, ensuring exceptional customer service and periodic patient check-ins, especially during longer wait times.
- Participate in pre-visit planning by reviewing patient medical records to anticipate diagnostic tests, supplies, or equipment the provider may require, and retrieving lab results or specialist reports as needed.
- Assist with completing prior authorizations, referrals, answering patient and third-party calls, managing voicemails according to office policy, and distributing medication samples as directed by the provider.
- Communicate schedule changes to providers before breaks, ensure proper handoff of tasks, and never leave during procedures without explicit provider permission.
- Fulfill additional medical or administrative support duties as assigned by the Provider, Practice Manager, Clinical Lead, or other Dawson Med management personnel.
Required Qualifications
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and interpersonal skills to ensure high-quality patient care and effective team collaboration.
- Proficient in computer applications and technical skills relevant to a clinical setting, with the ability to type quickly and accurately.
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication abilities, complemented by a commitment to excellent customer service.
- High school diploma required.
