Medical Assistant (MA) Job Description
The Medical Assistant (MA) plays a vital role in supporting physicians and healthcare professionals within a primary care setting. This full-time position involves assisting with patient care, performing essential clinical and administrative tasks, and ensuring a positive patient experience. The Medical Assistant (MA) is responsible for fostering a welcoming and efficient environment, contributing to the overall mission of providing high-quality healthcare services.
Responsibilities
- Accurately take and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, weight, and height, for all patients during their visits.
- Prepare patients for examinations and procedures by ensuring comfort and readiness, as well as gathering relevant medical history information as required by the provider.
- Assist physicians during examinations and procedures, offering clinical support and ensuring a smooth workflow in the exam room.
- Administer medications and injections to patients as directed by a supervising physician, adhering to best practices and safety protocols.
- Collect and prepare specimens, such as blood and urine, for laboratory testing, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all samples.
- Conduct basic laboratory tests within the scope of practice, providing timely and accurate results to assist in patient diagnosis and care.
- Draw blood (phlebotomy) from patients with proper technique and care, ensuring patient comfort and specimen quality.
- Sterilize medical equipment and maintain strict infection control procedures to ensure a safe clinical environment for both patients and staff.
- Change bandages and dressings as directed, monitoring wound healing and reporting any concerns to the supervising provider.
- Perform EKGs (electrocardiograms) as requested, following established protocols and documenting results accurately for provider review.
- Educate patients regarding prescribed medications, treatment plans, and procedures, ensuring they understand instructions and have the necessary information for follow-up care.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a Medical Assistant (MA) training program from an accredited institution preferred.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) is desirable.
- Proficiency in clinical procedures, such as taking vital signs, administering injections, and performing phlebotomy.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Basic computer literacy and familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to all relevant healthcare privacy regulations.
