Mechanical Estimator – Industrial Job Description
The Mechanical Estimator – Industrial plays a crucial role in supporting project acquisition and execution for industrial mechanical projects, including those in power plants, refineries, manufacturing facilities, pipe fabrication, and water or wastewater treatment plants. Based in Los Angeles, CA, this full-time position is responsible for providing precise and timely mechanical estimates, coordinating closely with both internal teams and external partners to ensure the company's competitive advantage and profitability within the industrial sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain ongoing communication with Pre-Construction Departments and General Contractors to identify bidding opportunities and cultivate professional relationships.
- Evaluate project opportunities to ensure alignment with the company's business model and strategic goals, emphasizing projects that match core competencies and have strong margin potential.
- Review detailed project documentation, such as plans, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), specifications, and contracts, to account for all factors impacting project scope and cost.
- Utilize and master computer-based take-off and mechanical estimating systems to generate accurate, reproducible results for industrial project bids.
- Assist with the sales process by developing comprehensive scopes of supply, preparing and delivering presentations as needed, and supporting negotiations and project closings.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to establish initial project budgets and process change order requests as needed throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participate in project kickoff meetings to present scopes of work, work plans, budgets, critical requirements, and any project limitations.
- Monitor project progress and compare actual production rates with estimated rates to support ongoing cost control and project management efforts.
- Support the preparation of project forecasts, claims, and schedules as required by project stakeholders.
- Assist with labor productivity tracking and support development of recovery plans for projects experiencing cost or schedule deviations.
- Attend weekly staff meetings to help identify scope changes, monitor production, and forecast future workload.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience estimating mechanical systems for industrial projects, such as those in power plants, refineries, or water/wastewater treatment facilities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel, to support estimating and reporting activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10 or more years of experience estimating mechanical systems for industrial markets.
- Hands-on field or craft experience in mechanical construction or installation.
- Comprehensive understanding of piping systems and equipment installation procedures in industrial environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods at a desk while working on estimates and documentation.
- Capability to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds as required for project materials or equipment.
- Good visual acuity to interpret detailed construction drawings, both on computer screens and on paper.
- Ability to navigate uneven surfaces on project sites and climb stairs to access temporary offices or site locations.
