The role of Lead Controls Engineer (also known in the industry as Lead Controls/Drives Engineer or Lead Automation Engineer) is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, commissioning, and modernization of multi-motor drive control systems in industrial environments, particularly within the steel and aluminum rolling mill sector. This full-time opportunity with TRC Talent Solutions, in partnership with a leading controls integrator, is focused on delivering state-of-the-art controls and drive solutions to enhance efficiency, product quality, and profitability for process manufacturing operations.
As a Lead Controls Engineer, you will apply your extensive hands-on experience with drive systems, specifically in the context of hot and cold rolling processes, tension control, speed synchronization, load sharing, and both sectional and coordinated drive systems. Your expertise with medium-voltage and high-power drive systems, as well as your familiarity with leading OEMs such as Primetals, SMS, Danieli, ABB, Siemens, and TMEIC, will be invaluable to the success of this position. The role involves collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams, mentoring engineers, supporting business development efforts, and ensuring the highest standards of engineering excellence throughout all project phases. Travel requirements for this position are approximately 25% to client sites as needed.

Lead Controls Engineer - Summary
- Lead the design, implementation, and modernization of advanced control and drive systems for industrial applications, with a primary focus on the steel and aluminum rolling mill industry.
- Serve as a technical leader and mentor within cross-functional engineering teams, ensuring successful project execution and continuous improvement in engineering standards.
- Collaborate closely with clients, internal teams, and partners to deliver innovative solutions that drive operational efficiency, product quality, and profitability.
- Support business development initiatives through technical sales support and proposal generation.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead and manage engineering teams in providing control and drive system solutions for diverse industrial applications.
- Analyze, design, and troubleshoot customers' drives and control systems, leveraging industry-leading practices and technologies.
- Utilize advanced test equipment for commissioning, start-up, and repair of various control equipment, including LV/MV AC/DC and coordinated drive systems, as well as PLC controllers.
- Define and implement programmable logic controller (PLC) and distributed control system (DCS) configurations tailored to specific process requirements.
- Perform on-site commissioning, system qualification, and testing to ensure optimal system performance and customer satisfaction.
- Mentor and train less-experienced engineers, fostering skills development and knowledge transfer within the team.
- Develop and refine engineering standards aimed at improving project efficiency and accuracy.
- Provide technical sales support, including proposal and change order authorship, to support business growth and client relationships.

Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Computer, or Chemical Engineering, or Engineering Technology preferred.
- Minimum seven (7) years of experience in automation, controls engineering, or related field.
- Proven ability to lead projects with minimal supervision, managing them from inception to completion.
- Strong technical and managerial skills, with effective communication abilities for interactions with clients and team members.
- Extensive hands-on experience with PLC or DCS platforms in industrial settings.
- Direct experience in the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of coordinated drives and controls equipment.
- Comprehensive understanding of DC/AC drives, Variable Speed Drives (VSD), and related control methodologies.
- Familiarity with key industrial communication protocols, such as DLAN, ISBUS, ProfiBus, and BacNet.
- Solid understanding of electrical power distribution as it relates to VSD operability and reliability.
- Strong awareness of process safety standards and good documentation practices.
