Inpatient Medical Coder (CIC, CCS) - Summary
- Responsible for accurate coding of inpatient medical records using ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG, and other coding systems as required by the Defense Health Agency (DHA)
- Operate in a full-time capacity within a remote, collaborative team
- Support federal healthcare initiatives with a focus on data accuracy and compliance
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough reviews of medical documentation to identify and resolve ambiguities or discrepancies that may impact coding accuracy or patient care quality
- Assign Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), and ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnosis and procedure codes based on clinical documentation
- Utilize MHS Genesis systems to remotely access records and assign accurate codes for inpatient encounters
- Meet and maintain productivity and accuracy standards, including a 97% coding accuracy rate
- Adhere to federal and institutional guidelines for coding and data security
- Participate in ongoing education and training to maintain certification and coding proficiency
- Collaborate with team members and management to ensure continuous improvement in coding practices

Qualifications & Requirements
- Associate’s degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or biological sciences; OR
- University certificate in medical coding; OR
- Completion of a medical training program beyond apprentice level (such as medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or equivalent training through the Armed Forces or U.S. Maritime Service under professional supervision)
- Minimum of one year of medical coding experience is required
- Preferred experience with DoD, Veterans Administration, or MHS Genesis medical coding
- Active certification from AAPC or AHIMA: Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
