HVAC Estimator Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced HVAC Estimator to join our team on a full-time basis in San Diego, CA. As an HVAC Estimator, you will play a crucial role in supporting our mechanical contracting operations by preparing accurate and competitive project bids. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of HVAC systems, construction bidding processes, and the ability to interface effectively with clients, project teams, and technical staff. Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough reviews of bid documents to ensure full comprehension of project requirements and scope of work.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and engage with clients to clarify technical and commercial aspects of upcoming projects.
- Perform quantity takeoffs for materials, equipment, and labor needed for HVAC installation and service jobs.
- Obtain and analyze pricing from suppliers, equipment vendors, and subcontractors to develop competitive project bids.
- Prepare and maintain accurate spreadsheets and proposal documentation for each bid opportunity.
- Utilize estimating software, such as QuoteExpress or comparable on-screen estimating tools, to develop detailed cost proposals.
- Collaborate with design professionals on design-assist and design-build projects, providing input to help guide the design within budget constraints.
- Coordinate with internal construction project teams and CAD detailing personnel to ensure estimates reflect current project requirements and standards.
- Maintain organized records and archives of all technical data and bid documents.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, Bluebeam, and Lotus Notes.
- Experience using QuoteExpress or other windows-based piping and sheet metal estimating systems is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of safety protocols, worker’s compensation, insurance, and bonding as they relate to the bidding process.
- Demonstrated ability to perform basic business mathematical functions required for estimating and proposal development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, vendors, and colleagues.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to handle and archive technical data efficiently.
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a fast-paced, multi-task environment.
- Capable of working independently with minimal supervision while managing time and project details effectively.
- Ability to interpret instructions delivered in written, oral, diagram, or schedule format.
- Compliance with all company operating policies, procedures, and programs.
- Preferred: 3-5 years of mechanical construction experience and demonstrated proficiency in preparing large, complex bid proposals.
- Strong ability to cooperate and collaborate with diverse teams and external partners.
