The Estimating Director – Civil Construction is a critical leadership position responsible for overseeing all aspects of the estimating department for heavy civil construction projects. This full-time opportunity in Los Angeles, CA, is ideal for professionals with a comprehensive background in preconstruction, estimating, and operations, particularly within the realm of large-scale infrastructure initiatives. Key Responsibilities
- Leadership: Provide visionary leadership to the estimating team, cultivating a collaborative and innovative environment that encourages continuous improvement and professional growth.
- Estimation Oversight: Manage the development and submission of detailed, accurate, and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. Ensure that all estimates are aligned with project goals, technical requirements, and financial constraints.
- Bid Management: Direct the bid process, including thorough analysis of project plans, specifications, and contract documents. Coordinate with project managers and other departments, manage joint venture partnerships, and present bids to key stakeholders.
- Cost Analysis: Conduct in-depth cost analyses to identify risks and opportunities, optimizing profitability while upholding quality and safety standards throughout each project phase.
- Team Development: Mentor and develop estimating staff through training, guidance, and resource allocation, ensuring the team remains at the forefront of industry best practices.
- Market Research: Stay current with industry trends, fluctuating material costs, and emerging construction technologies, ensuring the company’s estimating processes remain competitive and innovative.
- Client Engagement: Build and nurture relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers. Leverage these connections to support successful project execution and foster new business opportunities.
- Collaboration: Work closely with operations and project management teams to ensure seamless transitions from estimating to project execution. Address any issues that arise during the construction process to maintain project momentum.
- Compliance: Guarantee all estimates and bids adhere to relevant legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements to maintain company integrity and client trust.
- Project Participation: Attend project site pre-bid meetings, site tours, and pre/post-bid interviews as necessary to gather vital information and represent the estimating team.
- Subcontractor Management: Oversee and maintain the subcontractor database and manage subcontractor prequalification to ensure quality partnerships and project success.
- Relationship Building: Develop and sustain effective working relationships with customers, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and user groups, reflecting the company’s core values and exceeding customer expectations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in preconstruction, estimating, and/or operations for heavy civil construction projects, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
- Demonstrated success in bidding and managing large, complex projects exceeding $500 million in value.
- In-depth knowledge of construction methodologies, materials, pricing strategies, and industry standards.
- Outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and risk assessment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with diverse teams, clients, and stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficiency in estimating software such as OnScreen Takeoff, HCSS Heavy Bid, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), Bluebeam, AutoCAD 3D, and other relevant technologies.
- Resourcefulness and adaptability in solving challenges and embracing new industry developments.
