Diesel Mechanic Position Overview
The Diesel Mechanic position is a vital role within the Public Works Department, responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of a municipality's fleet of vehicles and equipment. This full-time opportunity offers hands-on responsibilities in the maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles, as well as small power equipment typically used in municipal operations. Based in Ayer, MA, the Diesel Mechanic will work on-site and contribute to the reliability and performance of essential municipal services.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on a diverse range of vehicles, including diesel and gasoline engines, ensuring all vehicles and machinery are in optimal working condition.
- Diagnose and service mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, brake, clutch, and suspension systems, utilizing technical manuals and diagnostic tools to address complex repairs.
- Overhaul engines, replace major components, and repair small equipment such as mowers, compressors, and jackhammers, supporting the broad maintenance needs of the department.
- Implement and operate a preventive maintenance program, accurately recording all work performed in both manual records and department’s computerized maintenance system.
- Order necessary parts for repairs, manage inventory, and assist with the development of vehicle specifications as required for procurement or upgrades.
- Participate in municipal snow removal and sanding operations during winter months, as well as respond to emergency road operations to maintain public safety and accessibility.
- Strictly follow safety protocols and contribute to a safe working environment, maintaining a daily activity log detailing all maintenance and repair activities.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience as a mechanic, with demonstrated expertise in maintaining and repairing diesel-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required for this full-time Diesel Mechanic position.
- Strong technical skills in troubleshooting and repairing mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
- Experience with computerized maintenance systems and maintaining accurate service records is strongly preferred.
- Strong organizational and inventory management skills, including the ability to order and track parts efficiently.
- Willingness to participate in emergency and seasonal maintenance operations, including snow removal, as needed by the municipality in Ayer, MA.
