Construction Estimator Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled Construction Estimator to join our team on a full-time basis in San Diego, CA. The Construction Estimator will play a critical role in supporting commercial construction projects by accurately estimating costs, managing preconstruction activities, and fostering strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and project teams. This position is ideal for professionals with a background in engineering, construction management, or a related field, and a thorough understanding of commercial construction industry practices. The Construction Estimator will be responsible for providing valuable input throughout the preconstruction process and ensuring project success from initial concept through to project completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the company professionally and support strategic initiatives within the commercial construction sector in San Diego, CA.
- Establish and nurture positive, long-term relationships with internal stakeholders, clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors.
- Adhere to and implement company policies, procedures, and lean culture practices.
- Engage in client pursuits, respond to RFPs, participate in interviews, and effectively promote the company to external business partners.
- Assume primary responsibility for large and complex commercial construction projects, leading preconstruction efforts and project teams.
- Identify tasks and requirements necessary to meet contractual obligations for each project.
- Ensure that estimates, schedules, constructability reviews, value engineering, cost reports, and purchase planning meet company standards for detail, quality, and timelines.
- Oversee the entire estimating process, including advertising, prequalification, solicitation of subcontractors, bid evaluation, and award.
- Develop and manage preconstruction schedules, identifying milestones, durations, long lead items, and resource needs.
- Collaborate with owners, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to resolve technical issues during design or pre-bid stages, providing critical engineering and cost data.
- Organize and lead estimating teams, clearly assigning responsibilities and deadlines to ensure project goals are met.
- Mentor and train junior estimators in all aspects of the preconstruction process.
- Prepare detailed estimates at all stages of design, including conceptual, design/build, guaranteed maximum price (GMP), and hard bid projects.
- Perform value engineering and life-cycle cost analysis to optimize project value for clients.
- Develop comprehensive bid packages and clearly defined subcontractor scopes of work.
- Participate in subcontractor selection, contract awards, and preparation of all subcontracts before project handoff.
- Demonstrate strong presentation and communication skills during RFP and interview processes.
- Use prescribed safety equipment and strictly adhere to company safety policies, including alcohol and drug use policies, as construction is considered a safety-sensitive field.
- Maintain consistent, in-person attendance at the assigned San Diego, CA location.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in construction management or with a general contractor, specifically in commercial construction estimating.
- Proven ability to produce accurate cost estimates, manage budgets, and provide value engineering solutions.
- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and use of estimating software.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Demonstrated understanding of commercial construction industry standards and practices.
- Strong customer service orientation, organizational, multitasking, and planning skills.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
- Ability to provide verifiable work references that demonstrate accomplishments, leadership, and communication skills.
- Successful completion of post-offer background and drug screening requirements.
