Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Job Overview
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) plays a critical role in both the clinical and administrative functions of a healthcare team. Working closely with physicians, nurses, and patients, the CMA ensures a seamless healthcare experience by providing essential patient care and supporting the daily operations of the medical practice. Key Responsibilities
- Support patient care by checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to examination or procedure rooms, and assisting with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, and preparing for examination.
- Obtain and record patient history, conduct screenings according to provider guidelines, chart patient information, and relay instructions to patients and families.
- Assist physicians and nurses with medical procedures, minor surgical procedures, and clinical tasks such as vital signs measurement, instrument preparation, and post-exam care.
- Perform administrative duties including managing patient medical records, processing forms and requisitions, scheduling appointments, verifying insurance coverage, and updating patient charts for completeness and accuracy.
- Handle environmental responsibilities such as setting up and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, performing infection control procedures, maintaining sterilization equipment, managing medical supplies, and restocking rooms.
- Ensure adherence to clinical protocols, including medical and surgical asepsis, instrument sterilization, and compliance with OSHA guidelines for laboratory procedures and biohazard waste disposal.
- Perform CLIA-waived testing, capillary punctures, venipunctures, specimen handling, and electrocardiography as required within the CMA scope of practice.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations, promote patient rights, and communicate effectively with the healthcare team to resolve issues and improve patient care.
- Participate in cross-training and take on additional responsibilities as needed to ensure seamless patient care and clinic operations.
- Demonstrate flexibility in response to changing priorities, optimize productivity during slow periods, and proactively prepare for future clinic needs through education and organization.
- Maintain positive relationships among healthcare teams by responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in a clinical healthcare setting.
- Proficient in PC skills, including electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
- Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certificate required; Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification preferred.
- Current CPR certification or actively pursuing certification.
- Commitment to attend required annual in-service programs and participate in continuing education activities to maintain and enhance professional skills.
