Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Position Overview
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) plays a vital role within a primary care setting, serving as the first point of clinical contact for patients. Reporting directly to the Clinical Nurse Manager, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) supports physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants by gathering essential patient information, supporting clinical operations, and facilitating quality patient care. This full-time position is fundamental to ensuring an efficient care environment and a positive experience for patients seeking medical services.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform nursing procedures under the supervision and direction of licensed healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants.
- Update and maintain patient flow sheets within the electronic medical record (EMR) system to accurately document quality measures and initiate orders for testing as required by practice protocols.
- Escort patients to examination rooms, gather visit-specific information through patient interviews, and accurately record vital statistics and histories into the EMR.
- Document the patient’s chief complaint, family and social history, personal history, current medications, and other relevant data within the EMR.
- Administer and perform various clinical procedures, such as EKGs, pulmonary function tests (PFTs), injections, Holter monitor setups, blood pressure checks, ear irrigations, and other tasks permitted by the legal scope of a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
- Assist providers during in-office surgical procedures to ensure safe and effective patient care.
- Deliver patient education and provide instructions as directed by the healthcare provider, ensuring patients understand their plan of care and follow-up requirements.
- Respond to patient telephone inquiries regarding prescription refill requests, document all communications in the EMR, and coordinate with providers and pharmacies as appropriate.
- Triage and process messages from patients, front office staff, other medical offices, and care facilities, ensuring timely and accurate communication to support patient care continuity.
- Maintain required logs and perform routine checks, such as monitoring vaccine inventories, refrigerator temperatures, and controlled medication logs, adhering to established protocols and safety standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the nursing supervisor, administrator, or healthcare providers to support the overall goals of the clinic.
Qualifications and Education
- Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program is preferred.
- National or state certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is required; candidates with multiple years of experience or those grandfathered as a CMA will also be considered.
Skills and Competencies
- Proficiency in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems, with experience in Greenway PrimeSuite considered advantageous.
- Strong command of medical terminology and clinical procedures relevant to primary care.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, customer service abilities, and telephone etiquette.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain an organized workspace and manage workflow to optimize patient care and clinic efficiency.
- Attention to detail, including accurate grammar, spelling, and punctuation in all written communications.
- Previous experience in a primary care environment is preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds routinely, and up to 50 pounds minimally as needed to assist with patient mobility.
- Frequently required to stand, walk, push, and pull; occasional sitting and pushing of patient wheelchairs may be required.
