Behavioral Health Clinician (BHC) Position Overview
The Behavioral Health Clinician (BHC) plays an integral role within a primary care clinic, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support the mental health and substance use needs of patients. This full-time position is essential for providing mental health and substance use disorder screenings, brief treatment interventions, referrals, and care coordination. The Behavioral Health Clinician (BHC) ensures that patients receive appropriate specialty mental health and substance abuse treatment services when needed. The role is designed to enhance patient care by integrating behavioral health services into the primary care setting, contributing to a holistic approach to health and wellness.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with primary care providers and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive mental health and substance use care.
- Administer and interpret mental health and substance use screenings within the primary care setting.
- Provide brief, targeted, and evidence-based behavioral interventions focused on prevention and early intervention for mental health, substance use, psychosocial, and physical health conditions.
- Facilitate referrals and coordinate care for patients requiring specialty mental health or substance abuse treatment services.
- Offer case management and crisis intervention services as needed to support patient stability and safety.
- Apply knowledge of community resources and placement options to support patients with mental health and substance use disorders.
- Maintain accurate and clear documentation of patient care, interventions, and referrals in compliance with legal and organizational standards.
- Demonstrate cultural competency and sensitivity in working with diverse patient populations.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support the clinic's mission as a Patient-Centered Medical Home.
- Contribute to improved patient adherence to healthcare goals and support self-management of chronic conditions or risk factors.
- Act as an agent of behavioral change to reduce health-risk behaviors and increase health-enhancing behaviors among patients.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, social work, or a related human services field.
- Licensure through the corresponding state agency, such as LCSW and/or LCAS at the provisional level or higher.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping abilities.
- Ability to prioritize patient needs and coordinate resource or referral assistance effectively.
- Experience in crisis intervention and case management is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Familiarity with laws, policies, and regulations regarding mental health and substance use disorder treatments.
- Knowledge of evidence-based treatments for mental health and substance use disorders.
